Hoi Ping Students Ranked Top in the World at Yale University
Date: 24/11/2024
13 Hoi Ping students travelled to Yale University in the United States in November 2024 to compete in the final leg of this year’s World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) competition – the Tournament of Champions (TOC). Having performed well enough in March to qualify first for the Seoul Global Round this summer, they then successfully qualified for the TOC. These 13 students started preparing months ago for the Tournament of Champions, which only the best of around 50,000 global competitors from over 60 regions/countries each year could join. They competed in English debating, collaborative writing, and quiz competitions based on 6 different themes, namely art and music, social studies, literature and media, history, science and technology, and a special theme designated each year.
While the TOC gathered only the cream of the crop worldwide, Hoi Ping students performed exceedingly well among them and brought back results that brought us pride. Despite the intense competition, the Hoi Ping delegation secured gold and silver medals in all events, and in particular, 6A Wan Sze Nok Matthew ranked 15th in English debating in the world, whereas 5E Suen Long Yin secured the 38th position in English writing among the best intellects in the world.
These achievements are phenomenal, especially considering that the vast majority of competitors are from international schools worldwide with immersive English environments. It is very encouraging that our students have been improving all the way from the Hong Kong Round to the final phase of the journey, rising to top positions in the world. Congratulations to all the prize winners!
