Inter-House English Debating Competition

S4 and S5 students were invited to take part in the Inter-House Debate Competition co-organised by the Students’ Union, the English Speech and Debating Club, and the four Houses. Debaters from the four Houses exhibited their research skills, analytical rigour, and oratorical skills to impress adjudicators in both rounds. The motions for the two rounds were as follows:

   

Preliminary Round: This house regrets the development of artificial intelligence.

Final Round: This house regrets organ trade.

   

The two motions were meant to inspire students to reflect on moral issues in our contemporary world. Held during the OLE lessons of all S4 and S5 students, the Final Round taught all participants relevant values pertaining to and beyond the issues at stake. The audience then chose an audience-voted Best Debater, and completed a worksheet where they were led to reflect on relevant values to earn bonus marks for their English exams.

   

After rigorous debates and a floor questioning session, the results of the competition were as follows:

Champion: Kan House

First Runner-up: Kin House

Second Runner-up: Tak House

Third Runner-up: Chi House

   

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Best Debater of Final Round decided by adjudicators: 5C Tin Yee Ning

Best Debater of Final Round voted by audience: 5C Tin Yee Ning

Best Debaters of Preliminary Rounds: 5B Ng Sin Hang and 5B Mak Hoi Ching
